Njål Steinsland (14 September 1942 22 January 2026) began his career as an organist at Dale outside Bergen in 1965. From 19671972 he was organist in his birthplace, Rennesøy. From 1972 he worked in Haugesund, first at Rossabø Church for 20 years, and then at Vår Frelsers Church from 1992 to 2009. That year he retired, but continued as a substitute organist in Haugesund and the surrounding area right up until 2024.
Njål Steinslands greatest contribution to church music was as a church service organist and choir director for Rossabø Churchs singing school, where many children and young people received thorough musical training connected to worship life and liturgy. One of Steinslands specialties was leading hymn singing from the organ bench in a way that brought out the text and made it easy to sing
along to. This practical love for and care of the hymns has left its mark on many people. It is therefore no surprise that the seven partitas in this edition are written on well-known and beloved hymns based on Norwegian hymn tunes. The works came into being over the course of an entire career. Several of the partitas were revised by the composer in the 2020s.
The partitas have received international attention. Following a revision in January 2021, Steinsland sent the manuscripts to the American organist Carson Cooman. Both Cooman and his colleague Erik
Simmons have performed the partitas on several occasions. Erik Simmons has also recorded all the partitas and published them on YouTube.
Professor Emeritus Kjell Habbestad has set the manuscripts in music notation and prepared them for publication. In order for the collection to appear consistent and as a unified whole, certain steps
have been taken. Some of the works bore the title «Liten Partita» (Little Partita) and others simply «Partita» in the manuscript; this has been standardized to «Partita.» Melodic sources and text authors
have been added. Obvious notational errors have been corrected, a few repeat signs have been inserted, and the beaming has been adjusted. The term cantus firmus (cf) is used where the melody moves in voices other than the soprano. In «Herre jeg hjertelig ønsker å fremme din ære», «Kven kan seia ut den gleda», «No livnar det i lundar», and «O Herre, la mitt øye» the composer provided his own suggestions for registration. In the other three, Habbestad has added registration suggestions. Only «Herre, jeg hjertelig ønsker å fremme din ære» has original tempo markings; in the remaining partitas, Habbestad has indicated tempo suggestions based on Erik Simmons recording. The composers recommendations are offered humbly, and the performer is free to interpret the partitas according to their own taste and to adapt them to the instrument on which the partita is to be performed.
Thanks to the American organists Carson Cooman and Erik Simmons, who have championed the partitas. Thanks to Kjell Habbestad for his thorough and precise music setting of the edition.
