This test piece version as been commissioned by Kunstfactor for use at the World Music Contest 2013
Composer's Note:
The musical origins of Far Horizons: Sailing West began with an invitation to compose an Anniversary tribute to the Lake Wobegon Brass Band of Minnesota. They marked their twentieth year in 2012, and I composed a celebratory work for Brass Band and Organ to accompany their tour of spring concerts. The present score, commissioned by Kunstfactor for use as a set piece at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade 2013, is an expansion of my original music, now cast as a Test Piece designed to explore the soloistic and ensemble potential of the modern brass band.
For the last five years, I have lived in Bristo in the South West of England, in a city rich in maritime heritage, and dominated by the immence natural resources of the River Severn. Serving as a pivotal historc trading port standing at the gateway to America, Far Horizons celebrates all that is positie in a pioneering spirit and aspirational sense of adventure.
