Finale from Suite for Variety Orchestra, Shostakovich, Trans Ian Jones, Brass Band
It was in 1938 that Dmitry Shostakovich's Suite for VAriety Orchestra was published. The score was lost just after its inaugural performance during World War II and was not rediscovered until very recently, resulting in a frequent misidentification of the suite as the Jazz Suite No. 2.
This short yet exiting work requires strict attention to the frequent dunamic changes. The whole piece relies on a strict bass line which, with Percussion, will keep the tempo steady. Havind this solid base will give those players with the tecnically challenging, florid semiquaver passages, a fighting chance.
A recording of this is found on the Melbourne Staff Band's CD, To Boldly Go.
