Idyll on an Irish Folk Hymn

Idyll on an Irish Folk Hymn was originally written for a concert of Irish music given by the Phoenix-based Salt River Brass. It was made at the request of a close friend of the composer, whose favourite melody this is.  It was rearranged as a cornet solo at the request of Roger Webster, for a guest soloist appearance he made with Salt River Brass.

Although the origin of the tune is not known, it is most often associated with the hymn "Lord of all hopefulness", with words by Jan Struther (1901-1953).  It is quite often sung at wedding services, immediately after the signing of the register. It speaks of the desire that God goes with the couple into the future, helping them to fulfil their vows.
