Suite from Hymn of the HighlandsAMP 047-010 Suite from Hymn of the Highlands draws three expressive musical pictures of the Scottish highlands. The first movement, Ardross Castle, features solo passages for clarinet and bassoon and features a fascinating bagpipe melody. The second movement, Alladale, is a saxophone trio with an accompaniment featuring the percussion section. A KLEZMER KARNIVALDESCRIPTIONKlezmer music originated in the shtetl (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as klezmorim, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the badkhn (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the Purimshpil (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. The crossing of a mountain pass is called traversada in Romansh. Such a crossing bears uncertainties and dangers, but also hope and new opportunities. Whoever sets out for a traversada is leaving behind whats familiar in the quest for new places and people. The piece Traversada, based on a Romansh song about farewell and uncertain reunion, musically depics such a journey. At the offset, off-stage soloists introduce fragments of the melody after which a dramatic narrative unfolds. An intense musical shift leads to a calm section, featuring the original melody in pulsating, muted sound colours. FRESH er et morsomt stykke som ble skrevet i 2004. Fresh ble bestilt av Rossland Skulekorps. Det var opprinnelig en låt for brass band, men komponisten har selv gjort en versjon for wind band (Janitsjarbesetning).Til dirigentenInstrumentasjonen tar hensyn til eventuelt manglende instrument i korpset. Derfor er noen stemmer gjort valgfrie (optional). Det betyr at stykket kan spilles med en ganske liten besetning, men det anbefales selvsagt at så mange av ?optional?-stemmene er dekket slik at låta får de riktige fargene.Det er lagt vekt på den pedagogiske gevinsten Fresh kan gi. SPANIA, her i et nydelig arrangement av Reid Gilje. I dette arrangementet er det de aller yngste Aspirantene som står i fokus som solister. Aspirantstemmen er på de 3 første tonene musikantene lærer. Her er en ypperlig sjanse til å la de aller ferskeste aspirantene få opptre med skolekorpset allerede etter få uker med opplæring. Dette har en stor motiverende effekt for de ferske aspirantene. Samtidig er det en fin anledning til å samarbeide mellom aspirantgruppen og hovedkorpset (evt. juniorkorpset).Denne enkle melodien, som består av de tre tonene C-D-E, inngår i flere opplæringssystemer. Arrangementet starter med et sidetema før Bb-instrumentgruppen har sin melodi. Deretter modulerer stykket slik at Eb-instrumentgruppen kan spille samme melodien (denne er forsterket i korpset deresom nødvendit). På slutten kan Eb-instrumentgruppen eventuelt komme inn igjen på helnoter.
