Drawing on the revised Urtext from the New Mozart Edition, this study score contains everything Mozart contributed to the string quintet genre. lt includes not only the six well-known quintets in B-flat major (K. 174), C major (K. 515), G minor (K. 516), C minor (K. 406/516), D major (K. 593) and E-flat major K. 614), but drafts and rejected versions from these works as well as all known quintet fragments.

Originally published in 1967, the text has been rechecked and revised as necessary on the basis of the autographs. The autograph scores of K. 174 and K. 515, neither of which was available for the 1967 edition, have been consulted for the first time. Manfred Hermann Schmid, professor of musicology at Tübingen University, has provided a three-part introduction. Part 1 illuminates the history of the genre and places Mozart's contribution in its historical context, while Part 2 discusses the chronology and genesis of Mozart's string quintets and Part 3 deals with problems specific to each work. Schmid's lengthy introduction thus serves as a concise monograph on Mozart's quintets that conveys valuable insights to musicians, students, and all admirers of Mozart's chamber music masterpieces.
