As timpanist of the Pittsburgh Symphony, William F. Ludwig, Sr. shared a love for the classical works that was only equaled by his passion to perform them on-stage. In 1909, Ludwig, being the purist he was, grew frustrated when the hand-tuned timpani of the day made it difficult to play Wagnerian parts to his liking. But it wasnt long before his frustration turned to inspiration. With a more practical, portable, pedal-tuned timpani in mind, the accomplished timpanist took on the role of part-time inventor.

Not surprisingly, Ludwigs earliest designs and models failed. Hydraulically operated hoses leaked. Cables stretched. But he was determined and never lost heart as perfecting the music was far too important to him. Then, in 1921, after years of disappointments, he struck perfection. The Balanced Action model remains the standard in timpani design and sound quality held around the world. You need only to hear the difference in a Ludwig Timpani to judge for yourself. Ludwigs Timpani embody the heart and soul of everyone who plays or dedicates their lives to music. Just as theres more to playing music than reading notes on a page, theres more to crafting timpani than shaping copper.

Today, it is estimated that there are more Ludwig Standard Symphonic Series Timpani in use throughout the world than all other models and brands combined. The Ludwig Standard Timpani kettles are mounted directly to the struts of the drum. This differs from the Professional and Grand Symphonic series timpani. Ludwig's patented Balanced Action Pedal allows for tuning of a major sixth per each drum. The Standard Series are built with interior tuning mechanics and are available in smooth copper or fiberglass kettles.

The Grand Symphonic, Professional, and Standard Series Timpani have all been updated with incredible new functionality.

New tuning gauge placement will allow these drums to be configured with American or German set-up. All tuning gauge linkage has been removed from the pedal and seamlessly transfered under the base.

A permanent third omni wheel has been added under the pedal. This wheel allows 360° fluid movement, allowing the player to have total control of drum placement.

Improvements have been made to the rear casters including upgraded braking, larger size wheels with a quick-release function. This allows smooth movement and the ability to quickly remove rear casters with ease.
