Sinfonietta Epica is a piece inspired by epic cinema and literature, as the title suggests. It is constructed more or less like a symphony: the first movement has two contrasting themes, similar to classical sonata form. A transition passage, which includes cadenzas for various solo instruments, leads to the second movement, which is slow and expressive, and is also based on two themes: one more horizontal and soloistic, the other more vertical, rather like a chorale. The finale is light and joyous and epitomises the epic character of the work. One can imagine travelling on a pirate ship, or at the head of a cavalry troop crossing the steppes. A fugue, which reunites the various themes, leads to the coda, which is sonorous and triumphant.
