Comments by Captain Ian Robinson
This is a piece of music that everyone should enjoy, players and listeners alike. It needs to be played steadily, ensuring that the swing feel is maintained throughout. Making swing sound easy takes a lot of hard work.
The Trombone choir sets the pace at the beginning and should be very smooth, particularly the Bass Trombone, who should not rush the 4th and 8th solo bars. The Flugel Horn should be prominent in letter A, but care must be taken not to rush the triplets - aim for a 'laid-back' sound. The dynamic at letter B is only f, and should not be overplayed. The soloists in letters C and D can take liberties with the notation, provided they remain within the chord structure and the context of the music.
The ongoing tempo must be maintained right up to the last three bars. Note that the final Trombone statement is not in swing style, and must be heard above the last chord!
