Tuba Classics Fantasiestucke op. 73 Robert Schumann, arr. Floyd Cooley. Tuba and Piano

Tuba Classics Schumann FantasiestuckeZart und mit Ausdruck Lebhaft leichtRash und mit FeuerFantasiestucke (Fantasy Pieces) is the title of three pieces, written on 11 and 12 February 1849, originally for clarinet, but also published by Schumann in versions for violin and cello. (Alternative instrumentations do in fact exist for all these sets of character pieces; to make translation for the tuba, therefore, though it involves coming up with thoughtful and tactful solutions to problems of octave registration, is simply to carry Schumanns own openness with respect to instrumental color one step further.) Schumann originally called them Soireestucke before he changed to the designation he had already used in 1837 for one of his finest cycle of piano pieces. Here, more than in any of the other 1849 sets of short pieces, Schumann is concerned with the cumulative effect of the group as a whole, tempi and characters being chosen to build mounting intensify. Tuba Classics Sonata in Eb, Johann Sebastian Bach, arr. Floyd Cooley. Tuba and Piano

Bach Sonata in E FlatAllegro ModeratoThe composition of instrumental music dominated Bachs years at Cothen 1717-1723. The Sonata in E flat Major is one of six flute and harpsichord sonatas written during this period. These were placid years for Bach, conducting the Court Orchestra and composing. The E flat Major Sonata is a happy and carefree representative of those years. The sonata is written in concerto form yet with melodic equality between the two instruments. Only the second movement, Siciliano, employs the harpsichord as a true accompanist, while the tuba sings melody with a pleasing tenderness.  Floyd CooleyNationally and internationally known tubist Floyd O. Tuba Classics Drei Romanzen op. 94 Robert Schumann, arr. Floyd Cooley. Tuba and Piano

Tuba Classics Schumann Drei RomanzenNicht Schnell -1Einfach, innigNicht Schnell -3The Three Romances, op. 94, come from the last month of 1849. Schumann intended them in the first place for oboe, but provided for alternative versions for violin or clarinet. The manner of the first Romance is demure. If, however, we listen carefully to the music, we hear that when the tuba melody begins, projected against a screen of simple chords in the piano, it adds a surprising stretch to the end of the first phrase so that we get in fact a beguilingly asymmetrical five measures. Schumann makes quasi-amends by adding a three measure echo, odd in itself, but conciliatory in that it makes the whole package add up to a neat eight bars. When the tuba resumes, it does so in pairs of three measure phrases; also the overlapping melodies of tuba and piano are rhythmically anything other than naive or obvious. In other words, beneath the Biedermeier exterior there beats a distinctly subversive heart. Adventure, understated adventure not quite letting on that it is adventure, is altogether a hallmark of these pieces. And if, for example, the symmetries and rhymes of the second Romance seem to contradict all this, it is only the more effectively to set off the impetuous gestures of its slightly quicker middle section and the delicious oddities of the closing piece of this opus.Floyd CooleyNationally and internationally known tubist Floyd O. Song for the Skies, Paul Lovatt-Copper. Tuba Eb and Piano

Composition - Song for the SkiesCommissioned by tuba virtuoso Les Neish this piece is a simple yet beautiful solo for the E flat Tuba. It is a slow melody with a nice Celtic feel to it and is suitable for all tuba players who enjoy playing slow melodies. Circa 3'20". Soloist: Grade 4 ABRSM       Section: 4+Song for the Skies was commissioned by Tuba virtuoso Les Neish and was given its world premier on the December 9th 2010 with the James Madison University Brass Band in Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA.Les asked me to compose a slow melody that highlights the wonderful sonorous sound of the Tuba. I am a big fan of Les and of the instrument and knowing the capabilities of Les as a soloist I wanted to experiment with the range and colour of the instrument in this solo. After a warm introduction from the ensemble the soloist enters almost timeless over the muted cornets. The melody when it is first heard has a somewhat haunting Celtic feel to it. It is intentionally marked as con rubato so that the soloist can really put their own musical stamp on the music. As the haunting melody repeats again this time in a change of key the accompaniment takes more of a role within the piece of music performing counter melodies within this second section. The middle of the piece introduces a new secondary melodic device that serves as an introduction to the original melody played in all its glory by the ensemble. This dies away to leave the second half of the melody in the euphoniums and baritones as the soloist plays a soaring counter melody in the highest register of the instrument. The piece starts to return home with a recapitulation of the introduction followed by the second part of the original melody by the soloist. After a momentary reflective solo from the soloist the introduction is used for a final time before the tuba guides us home to conclude. For the soloist, there are a number of occasions where the opportunity to play in the upper register of the instrument arises. However, I have also given the opportunity for the soloist to play various passages down the octave so it suits the performers playing style and range.Song for the Skies is very simple yet beautiful and I feel it suits the playing of the Eb Tuba perfectly. I hope you enjoy performing it.

During the first years of its performance the work was received with mixed enthusiasm. By the end of Brahms life, however, it was widely performed and by the first decades of the 20th century it was firmly embedded in the repertoire of many distinguished cellists. It was notably Robert Hausmanns advocacy of the work which seems to have contributed greatly to its promotion.Of particular value to the editors were the three early performance editions of the Cello Sonata op. 38 by Cornelius van Vliet and Edwin Hughes, Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg, as well as Julius Klengel. The cellists van Vliet, Becker and Klengels fingering and bowing allows for a better understanding of their performance practice. As such, the Bärenreiter edition comes with a cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the works origins, early performances, its publication as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms death a widening gulf developed between the composers expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. In a very concrete and practical way, the editors summarize some of the key issues in understanding Brahms notation with regard to rhythm and timing, dynamics and accentuation, dots and strokes, slurring and non legato, piano pedalling and overholding, piano arpeggiation and dislocation, string instrument fingering, string instrument harmonics and vibrato. In this way, the edition offers an exciting and often surprising insight in Romantic musical interpretation.Content· Preface· Performance Practice Commentary· Vorwort· Hinweise zur Aufführungspraxis· Composer / Author: Brahms, Johannes - Sonata for Violoncello and Piano in E minor op. 38, Instrumentation: Violoncello, Piano· Critical Report

Trommesett Sonor 150th Anniversary Signature Shells Set, Bubinga/Beech w/Gold Hardware

Slagverk Sonor 150th Anniversary Signature Shells Set, Bubinga/Beech w/Gold HardwareFusing Legacy and modern TechnologyThe original SONOR Signature Series was introduced at the Frankfurt Musikmesse in 1980. It was the result of extensive scientific research commissioned by SONOR in the pursuit of building the most sonically and technically advanced high-end drum set of its time. The extremely deep and heavy 10.5mm beechwood shells were designed for the most unobstructed drum head vibration, resulting in the purest tone with the most resonance and projection. To say that the Signature Series raised the bar for high-end drums would be an understatement. It defined what high-end drums were supposed to be from that point on.The 150th Anniversary Signature Series Shell Sets are more than just a reissue of the original from the 1980s. They are a tribute which merges tradition and innovation by combining a replica of theSignature Series shell with contemporary state-of-the-art shell hardware features. To faithfully recreate the iconic Signature Series shell, 13 plies of selected German beech veneer are cross-laminated. As with the original, genuine Bubinga is used for the outer and inner ply of the shell. The stunning grain structure, various color shades and dark streaks of the Bubinga Pommelé (Guibourtia demeusii) used for this instrument add even more visual dimension. To emphasize the naturally grown beauty of the Bubinga veneer, the shells are finished with clear high gloss lacquer, which is applied in multiple lacquering and polishing stages by hand. All hardware on the drums is plated with 24-carat gold to offset the dark and saturated brown color of the veneer as well as create the ultimate luxurious experience. Finally, all drums receive individually numbered commemorative badges to certify the uniqueness of each 150th Anniversary Signature Series Shell Set.The 150th Anniversary Signature Series Shell Set is strictly limited to 75 pieces worldwide. 25 of which are made in the Heritage outfit featuring authentic Signature Series shell depths, whereas the remaining 50 use shallower, more contemporary depths.
