DREI SONATEN UND DREI PARTITEN - JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACHWithout any doubt J.S. Bachs cycle of the three Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 represents one of the pinnacles of classical European music. According to C.P.E. Bach a contemporary voice stated that there was 'nothing more accomplished in order to become a good violinist' than his fathers works. The cycle reflects the entire harmonic and polyphonic musical universe of Bachs time, so masterfully composed that it can be rendered within the limited framework of but a single instrument the violin.The new publication of the Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 (BA 5256) constitutes a complete revision of our older edition (BA 5116). The musical text has been edited by Peter Wollny and represents the most up-to-date state of research as published in the New Bach Edition Revised (NBArev), volume BA 5937-01. The edition is mainly based on Bachs unusually clear autograph which is considered among the most beautiful manuscripts by the composer. All relevant secondary sources have been taken into consideration in order to clarify ambiguities. These include five contemporary copies, including one by Anna Magdalena Bach, and four manuscripts from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.The musical text has been newly engraved with a clear and generous layout, whereby page turns and pagination have been retained from the previous edition. This allows the straightforward navigation between a copy of the previous and this new edition. The Boy Paganini - Violin and Piano, Edward MollenhauerBorn in Erfurt, the composer Edward Mollenhauer (18271914) achieved success in America as a soloist and teacher. His best-known pieces for young violinists are The Infant Paganini and The Boy Paganini.Both appear here in their original version for violin and piano and, for the first time, in a transcription for cello and piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus.The Mollenhauer fantasia The Infant Paganini is a charming introduction to early virtuoso techniques. It calls for bowing techniques such as detaché, legato, spiccato and arpeggios over three strings. Players are also expected to play harmonics and pizzicato.This showpiece (BA 10691) can be accomplished by young violinists who can play in first to third position and who are nearing completion of the Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Violin, volume 4.It (BA 10693) can be equally mastered by young cello students who are working with volume 4 of the Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Cello and can manage first to fourth position.The Boy Paganini is an impressive concert piece which is more demanding. Its two movements call for changes of metre, harmonics and pizzicato. The publishers have added a frther twenty Christmas Carols making the book unique in that it contains everything needed for worship in one book.As in the previous edition the arrantements are designed to be used by four players upwards. WIND BAND - Apart from the melody and bass, to which the allocation of parts is obvious, the 2nd and 3rd trumpet (+2nd and 3rd Clarinet) parts, 1st and 2nd horn adhere strictly to the alto part, etc.It will be seen that the correct choice of instruments, e.g. flute, 1st and 2nd horn, E-flat bass will provide a four-part balance. BRASS BAND - Apart from the melody and bass, to which the allocation of parts is obvious, the 2nd and 3rd cornet, solo and 1st horn adhere to the alto part - similary the 2nd horn and 1st paritone to the tenor part. (Lest this should appear to leave the tenor line weak, it should be hoted that in the main this is strenghened by 2nd baritone and tenor trombone in such a way to ensure the balance of alto and tenor lines with a normal complement). The Euphonium is independen t but usually doubles either the melody or the bass.It will be seen that the correct choise of instruments, e.g. solo cornet, 1st and 2ndt horn, E-flat bass wil provide a four-part balance.
