Scott Rogers har alltid jobbet med musikk for barn og unge, blant annet i korpsbevegelsen, kulturskolen, videregående skoler og som produsent for Rikskonsertenes skolekonsertordningen. I dag er han konsertsjef for Rikskonsertene. Helt siden 1994 har Rogers skrevet og arrangert musikk spesielt tilpasset de yngste. Scott Rogers har sin musikkutdannelse fra St. Olaf College og The Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester i USA.

DEBUT-SERIEN

Alle Debut-stykkene er laget med hensyn til de utfordringene som møter ethvert ensemble med nybegynnere. Stykkene er beregnet på å kunne fungere for ensembler med store variasjoner når det gjelder besetning og individuelle instrumentale ferdigheter.

Noe av motivasjonen hos nybegynnere er å kunne spille for familier, venner og kjente. Det å ha melodier man kan spille sammen med venner unisont, tostemt eller trestemt gjør det også lettere for nybegynnere å opptre i ulike sammenhenger. 

Debut tar utgangspunkt i sanger som er godt kjente i Norge. Dette er for at musikantene skal ha en auditiv fasit de kan sammenligne eget spill med. Harmoniseringene er ofte tradisjonelle med sterkt innslag av veksling mellom tonika og dominant for å styrke utvikling av tonalitetsfølelsen.

I Debut får alle musikantene en melodistemme, men også en harmoni- (B-stemme) eller basstemme (C-stemme). Dette gjør det mulig for fleksible ensembleløsninger. Hvert ensemble kan få en fordeling av stemmer som låter optimalt i forhold til ensemblets besetning og ferdigheter. Dirigenten kan også bytte sammensetningen av stemmer underveis for å gi alle en mulighet til å spille melodien. På denne måten kan man repetere sangene mange ganger samtidig som de individuelle utfordringene blir fornyet for hver gang. Alle i ensemblet får den erkjennelsen det er å spille melodilinjen, samtidig som viktige begreper som intonasjon, balanse og behov for indre stemmer og basslinjen blir tydeliggjort på en hørbar måte. Solister kan også spille med ensembleakkompagnement på denne måten, noe som er ekstra morsomt.

Ethvert arrangement som tar hensyn til det instrumentale omfanget og de toneartene som nybegynnere har lettest for å spille, risikerer å komme til kort når det gjelder stemmer for horn og saxer. En toneart som er midt i blinken for tromboner og klarinetter er ofte for høy eller for lav for horn og saxer. I Debut bærer melodistemmene denne begrensningen og dirigenten må være klar over at solospill på horn og saxofon ligger på et annen vanskelighetsnivå enn de øvrige instrumentene. Det er derfor horn og sax stemmer ikke har B- eller C-stemmer, men egne horn/sax-stemmer. DEBUT-SERIES

All Debut pieces are arranged with consideration for the challenges that meet every ensemble of beginning musicians. The arrangements are constructed to function well for a variety of skill levels and instrumental combinations.

A crucial element of motivation for beginning musicians lies in performing for family and friends. Having access to melodies that are playable as solos, duets or trios make it easier for young musicians to get important early performing experience.

Debut uses melodies that are well known in Norway. This is to supply young musicians with an existing melodic model to which they can compare their playing. The harmonization is traditional, with a strong presence of tonic-dominant harmony to facilitate the development of tonality concepts.

In Debut, all musicians have a melody part as well as either a harmony part (B part) or bass line (C part). This makes it possible for the conductor to adjust the scoring of the arrangement to the existing instrumentation of the ensemble. It also makes it possible to change the distribution of parts while working on the piece, to increase or sustain motivation in the ensemble. In this manner, the piece can be repeated many times without becoming predictable and unchallenging. Everyone in the ensemble can get a chance to play the melody, while at the same time working on concepts like tuning, balance and the importance of inner parts. Soloists can be assigned the melody while the rest of the ensemble plays the accompaniment. This is a good way to positively reward musicians who have practiced hard, and a solid confidence builder!

Any arrangement for beginning band must consider the instrumental ranges of beginners as well as the most easily accessible keys. This usually leaves the saxophones and the horns at a disadvantage. A key that works well for the trombones and the clarinets is often either too high or too low for the horns and saxes. The arrangements in Debut share this common flaw. Many of the melodic lines for horn and saxophone are, of necessity, much more difficult than they are in the other instrumental parts. For this reason, the horn and sax parts do not have a regular B- or C-line. They have instead their own harmony line. One that is specially adapted for beginning hornists and saxophonists. The conductor must take these limitations into account when distributing parts to the ensemble. The ensemble will attain the fullest sound by using a well planned combination of A, B, C and horn/sax parts.

The melody in the percussion part is written for melodic percussion, while the other percussion line is written for snare drum and bass drum. It is never too early to introduce percussion players to the melodic instruments, and Debut provides a good opportunity. The conductor can also use other percussion instruments to cover the snare/bass parts to produce greater variation for the percussionists, and new timbre combinations for the ensemble.

Windows of the World, Peter Graham. Wind Band

Windows of the World, (wind version written for the Royal Norwegian Navy Band), provides solo opportunities for several principal players. Graham takes us first to Latin America, then to Japan, and onwards to sub-Saharan Africa. We get a gentle reprieve via a nostalgic hint of the British Isles before we land in the melting pot of all styles, the USA. In this final movement the driving swing section is abruptly stopped and a drum cadenza leads us back into the opening Latin music, with hints of the other styles as well. By making this model out of Hornwood Im also able to increase the weight of the stick without increasing size and bulk. Our Hornwood is very dense and hard and adds a couple grams of weight as well. The feel is something like rosewood or ebony but without the excessive vibration and low pitch that come with those woods. It is also extremely durable and will likely last you a lifetime if cared for properly. I feel this is the absolute best version of this stick I have come up with to date. Really a perfect stick for ANY soft playing that requires clarity.
